Before the Apprenticeship
Before finding out about Degree Apprenticeships, I was preparing to go to university. The fact that I'd be the first in my family with the opportunity to go made it seem like the only right choice, despite the fact that I really didn't want to take on the debt. At this point, I also had no idea what I wanted to study so, like many Sixth Formers, I was feeling a little stuck.
Challenges & Barriers
There were two main challenges that I faced before securing my apprenticeship: being the first in my family to pursue a career, and not knowing what I wanted that to look like. I knew that I didn't want to just work a job my whole life — but I didn't know the kind of career I wanted to pursue either.

Being able to start my career straight out of school and further my education without going into any debt motivated me to pursue a Degree Apprenticeship. It felt like the perfect opportunity for me.
How I Found My Apprenticeship
I found my apprenticeship in a Sixth Form assembly. Someone had come to share what he was doing at Amazon, which was actually an internship and not an apprenticeship, but in doing so shared that they also do Degree Apprenticeships.
The Turning Point
Receiving my first few final-stage interviews/assessments was a turning point for me — one of which is the role I ended up accepting. It made me realise that I wasn't wasting my time spending hours applying to roles each day.
My Current Role
In my day-to-day, I work on projects that improve logistics. This involves a lot of meetings, and much more data than you'd think. An example of this is searching for weaknesses in operations, identifying those involved and working with these stakeholders to refine and improve the processes used.
Impact on My Life
Starting my Degree Apprenticeship has helped me mature. Working a full-time job where I have real responsibility, as well as balancing university deadlines and life as a 19 year old has also taught me some essential discipline.
My biggest achievement so far has been navigating a change in teams as a result of circumstances outside of my control. Although this originally felt like starting again from square one, it has turned out to be an amazing opportunity.
