“At this moment, I saw that all the efforts I had made, even with all the rejected applications, were all worth it in the end.”
Before the Apprenticeship
Prior to my apprenticeship, I was a sixth form student navigating both university applications as well as apprenticeships.
Challenges & Barriers
I faced quite a few rejections whilst applying to different apprenticeships and at times, these rejections would almost demotivate me into applying for others. However, with more applications I completed, I developed confidence with the processes involved and looked at ways I could improve for future applications.
“I was very fortunate to be a part of a network of individuals who understood a lot about apprenticeships and the impacts...”
I was very fortunate to be a part of a network of individuals who understood a lot about apprenticeships and the impacts that they have. I engaged in a range of work experiences where I was introduced to what apprenticeships entailed. I heard from individuals who were already undertaking some and got to learn about the different departments that their companies offered. Through these experiences and discussions, I developed a great understanding of how the work and study balance would be of benefit to me. I had an understanding that I wouldn't just be working, but developing soft and interpersonal skills that would be beneficial to me in days to come, and I was going to receive a qualification in addition. My sixth form was also very helpful in sharing about apprenticeships with assemblies, company visits, and alumni connections.
How I Found My Apprenticeship
I found out that apprenticeships were carried out at M&G through engaging in some work experience prior, where I got a feel of what the company was like and developed an understanding of what apprenticeships looked like within M&G and the different roles and qualifications that were available to me. This experience gave me the confidence to know that the company and its apprenticeships were the right fit for me, and once applications were released online, I immediately applied.
The Turning Point
The turning point for me was when I received a call later on the same day of my assessment centre that I had got the apprenticeship offer. At this moment, I saw that all the efforts I had made, even with all the rejected applications, were all worth it in the end.

My Current Role
As a Data Management apprentice, I ensure that I collect and process data securely and efficiently for better business outcomes. On a day to day basis, I work within different categories of Data Management ranging from areas such as Data Cataloguing. With this area, I utilise tools to input internal and external data under the right domains whilst also maintaining role based access controls. I am involved with Data Quality where I contribute to the accuracy of data through techniques such as cleansing and integrating. I branch out to areas revolving around Data Governance where I look at the standards and protocols that data is involved with and its relevance to the company as a whole.
Impact on My Life
I have experienced a very positive impact. I have seen a development in my soft skills which have been beneficial to me even outside of the work place. I have been able to develop professionally through my current display in the completion of tasks, delivering of presentations and independent studies successfully to the best of my ability. I have developed great confidence in and out of the work place where I now communicate effectively to individuals, actively reach out for opportunities and am able to share my ideas within discussions.
My biggest achievement has been being a part of the success of a Financial Wellbeing event held at M&G by The Humble Penny. I participated in the promotion of the event within the M&G workplace where I organised a book raffle which featured the Sunday Times bestseller 'Financial Joy', having over 150 employees eagerly sign up. The day of the event came and it was great to see the audience come to life with high levels of engagement and relatability.

Advice to Aspiring Apprentices
“Ensure that heavy research and insight is gained. This applies to having an understanding of what exactly apprenticeships are and how an understanding of this relates to your aspirations and goals. Also, look carefully at the requirements and tasks involved within the application processes and set yourself up for success through practice and an emphasis on maintaining deadline expectations. Lastly, hear from individuals who have had the apprenticeship experience to receive greater insight and ask questions where necessary.”
